Props to Alex who sent round this amazing video a couple of weeks ago:
Good, eh? The song's pretty good, but the video's awesome - like 'Cog', but better. It's American band Ok Go! who you may also remember them from another awesome video from a few years ago. Even if you don't remember it, I'm sure you've probably seen the rather poor, and totally shameless, copy of it for Berocca.
Now the video, postecd on Youtube, became something of an internet sensation. And rightly so. But there was a rub. Their record company, EMI, disabled the embed code. So people couldn't ake the video and re-post it on their own pages, profiles and blogs.
OK Go! weren't happy about this at all. What's the point of having a great video if you're going to limit the number of people who can see it? This is the equivalent of radio play in the 21st century. The more people exposed to the music, the more likely people are to buy it, right? Well, not according to EMI, who wouldn't budge.
So OK Go! quit the label. And enabled embedding. And download sales increased sevenfold.
Though I really, really hate to say this, it looks like the music business still doesn't get it. (I just threw up a little bit typing that).
