Everyone loves a conspiracy theory. I know I do. It may not be cool to like Costner, but I always liked the film JFK. Until I spotted some killjoy documentary that totally blew apart the 'magic bullet' theory. Damn the facts!
Nowhere will a conspiracy theory find a more conducive environment for growth than the internet. Them bloggers love 'em. We love to uncover the shady dealings of institutions and tell the world. Take the Unilever 'Onslaught' controversy. We've mentioned this plenty of times before, so no need to go over it again. A refresher is here.
Latest in the line of institutions to be in the line of fire - Coldplay.
Just as their shiny new album 'Viva La Vida' hits the stores and the iTunes ad featuring them hits the airwaves ... shock, horror! They only went and plagiarised it!
A seemingly very put out band called 'Creaky Boards' have put out this video, accusing Chris Martin of turning up at their gig, liking what he heard and making a mint off the back of it. Perhaps he spent the gig writing the melody down on the back of his hand? They've gone to a reasonable amount of effort in proving their point too. See what you think.
What can we make of all this? Well, perhaps Chris Martin is just plain evil (I blame Gwyneth). Then again, given that all publicity is good publicity, perhaps this is a bit of courted controversy to get people talking about the album.
Hang on a minute, haven't I just spent several minutes listening to a song by a band I've never heard of, likening their art to one of the biggest bands in the world, and feeling empathy with them? I saw some of their live performance and it looked good. I love Creaky Boards, and I'd never heard of them ten minutes ago!
A very cute bit of self-promotion perhaps?
Thanks to Christian and Anna for fuelling the conspiracy.
